Y se pusieron los pantalones… / And then they wore trousers…

A pesar de todos los esfuerzos por contenerlo, el pantalón progresó inexorablemente y la moda fue su mayor aliado. / In spite of all the efforts to prevent it, the advance of trousers was unstoppable, with fashion as their greatest ally.

Sucesor de las llamadas bragas del siglo XVII, el pantalón, símbolo de masculinidad y gran protagonista de la frase “llevar los pantalones”, paradójicamente terminó por transformarse en un símbolo de la lucha femenina por la igualdad de sexos, pasando a la historia como emblema de libertad y modernidad.

• Trousers, the successors to 17th century breeches, the symbol of masculinity and the origin of the catchphrase “wearing the trousers”, have paradoxically ended up becoming a symbol of the feminist fight for equality of the sexes and have gone down in history as an expression of freedom and modernity.

El terremoto producido por las dos guerras, hizo que su uso “práctico” se extendiera por todos los sectores de la sociedad. Marlene Dietrich vestía diferentes uniformes en cada uno de sus giras patrióticas y en escena. La misma princesa Isabel de Inglaterra se dejó fotografiar con un pantalón del Auxiliary Patriotic Service, mientras cambiaba un neumático. Unos años mas tarde, en Francia, Jean Seberg, Brigitte Bardot y Françoise Sagan, se transformarían en símbolo de la liberación sexual y en íconos de la modernidad.

• The upheaval caused by the two world wars made it “practical” to wear them and they became common at all levels of society. Marlene Dietrich wore a variety of uniforms in her patriotic tours and on stage. Even Princess Elizabeth of England was photographed wearing Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service trousers as she changed a tyre. Some years later, in France, Jean Seberg, Brigitte Bardot and Françoise Sagan became symbols of sexual freedom and icons of modernity.

•   “It is forbidden to forbid” proclaimed the walls of Paris in May 1968. However, in spite of all the efforts to prevent it, the advance of trousers was unstoppable, with fashion as their greatest ally, even awarding the Yves Saint-Laurent trouser suit a title of nobility.

En alguna ocasión, durante la temporada de premios, hemos sido testigos de alguna valiente que se anima a pisar la alfombra roja en pantalones… y salir airosa, encabezando la lista de las mejores vestidas. La primera fue Julie Christie quien recibió el Oscar a mejor actriz en 1966, enfundada en un mono de lamé dorado. Este acto de osadía de inmediato la colocó a la cabeza de las peor vestidas de su época, pero su estilo pionero no pasó inadvertido por la generación más joven y rebelde de Hollywood (Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda, Faye Dunaway), que una década mas tarde convirtió esta prenda de poder masculino en un must de la noche de Los Ángeles.

• Every once in a while, during the awards season, we can see some brave woman venture onto the red carpet in trousers… and walk off with flying colours, at the top of the best dressed list. The first to do so was Julie Christie, who received the Oscar for Best Actress in 1966 sporting a gold lamé jumpsuit. This piece of daring immediately placed her at the head of the worst dressed of the era, but her pioneering style did not go unnoticed among the rebellious younger generation in Hollywood (Barbra Streisand, Jane Fonda and Faye Dunaway). A decade later this symbol of masculine power became a must for Los Angeles night-life.

En la ultima entrega de los Golden Globes Awards la comediante Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live) acaparó todos los flashes con un elegantísimo tuxedo negro by Stella McCartney quien, dicho sea de paso, se ha dejado ver la temporada pasada en varios eventos fashion llevando un cómodo jumsuit estilo pijama, negro, of course. Por su parte, “la chica del tatoo” Rooney Mara hizo honor a su aire misógino tan festejado por la prensa internacional llevando un mono de la firma Roksanda en la red carpet de Estocolmo.

• At the latest Golden Globe Awards, the comedienne Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live) was the target of all the flashes in an elegant black tuxedo by Stella McCartney, who, by the way, was seen at several fashion events last season wearing a pyjama-style jumpsuit, in black, of course. When her turn came, Rooney Mara, “the girl with the dragon tattoo”, paid homage to her misogynistic look that has received so much attention from the international press by wearing a Roksanda jumpsuit on the red carpet in Stockholm.

Lo que parece seguro es que este estilo de esencia varonil y austera sofisticación que en su día supo instaurar la visionaria Coco Chanel impulsando el pantalón como protagonista principal del vestuario femenino, esta temporada llega con aires renovados, envueltos en un porte seductor, diplomático y elegante, donde también se perciben las reminiscencias de los excéntricos Beau Brummel y Oscar Wilde.

• What seems certain is that trousers, an essentially masculine and austerely sophisticated style, which in her day were featured by the visionary Coco Chanel as the mainstay of a woman’s wardrobe, have made a comeback this season with renewed vigour: seductive, diplomatic and elegant, and with flashbacks to the eccentricities of Beau Brummel and Oscar Wilde.
